Old Town is an unincorporated community in Dixie County, Florida, set on the west bank of the Suwannee River in the state's Big Bend and Nature Coast region. It sits at the crossroads of U.S. 19 and State Road 349, roughly 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and about an hour from Gainesville. Unlike the incorporated cities of Florida's coasts, Old Town remains a rural, lightly developed settlement where the river and surrounding forests define daily life.
The area's history is layered and distinctive. It appears on maps as early as 1874, and during the 19th century it served as an agricultural and residential hub, functioning as a critical steamboat stop for lumber, naval stores, and passengers moving along the Suwannee. Before white settlement, the site was home to a Seminole community that military records of the era called "Bowlegs Town," after Chief Billy Bowlegs; it was destroyed in 1818 during the First Seminole War. A submerged remnant of that river trade, the steamboat City of Hawkinsville, still rests beneath the Suwannee River Bridge at Old Town.
