Minneola is a city in southern Lake County, Florida, located just north of Clermont in the gently rolling hills that distinguish this corner of Central Florida from the flatter terrain around Orlando. Part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area, Minneola sits near the southern end of the Clermont chain of lakes and has grown substantially in recent decades, from a small citrus-era town to 13,843 residents in the 2020 census and roughly 22,000 in recent estimates.
The city's name carries a piece of agricultural history: the Minneola tangelo, a citrus hybrid, was named for the community, reflecting the region's long citrus and tomato-growing past. The Clermont-Minneola hills were noted as early as the 1890s for their fertile upland soils, and the area was originally divided between Sumter and Orange counties before Lake County was formed in 1887. That rolling topography remains the area's signature, offering elevation changes and lake views unusual for Florida.
Modern Minneola is defined by residential growth and its position on the region's road network. The Lake Minneola Scenic Trail, part of a planned 21-mile South Lake corridor, links the city to Clermont's waterfront and, ultimately, to the West Orange and General James Van Fleet trails.
