Crystal River is a city in Citrus County, Florida, set along King's Bay, a spring-fed estuary on the Gulf Coast about an hour north of Tampa. With a population of about 3,400, it is a small city with an outsized ecological identity: it is the self-professed 'Home of the Manatee' and the heart of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, the only national wildlife refuge dedicated to protecting the West Indian manatee. The city incorporated in 1903 and anchors the Homosassa Springs metropolitan area's tourism and nature economy.
The defining feature of Crystal River is its springs. More than 70 springs feed Kings Bay with clear, consistently warm water, creating one of the largest natural winter refuges for Florida manatees on the Gulf Coast. Each winter, large numbers of manatees gather in the bay and its spring runs, and regulated swim-with-manatee tours operate under permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
