Brooksville is a city in and the county seat of Hernando County, Florida, situated about 50 miles north of Tampa along the state's Nature Coast. It is one of the region's oldest communities, with a history stretching back to the mid-19th century, when it grew from two neighboring settlements, DeSoto and Pierceville. That long history is still visible today in a compact, tree-shaded downtown of century-old buildings, historic homes, and broad live oaks draped in Spanish moss, giving the city an "Old South" character that distinguishes it from many younger Florida communities.
For much of the 20th century, Brooksville was an agricultural and citrus hub, known for a time as the "Home of the Tangerine." That rural heritage persists in the surrounding countryside, where ranching and farming remain part of the landscape, even as the broader Hernando County region has grown with new residential development. The city itself has stayed comparatively small, preserving a close-knit, small-town civic life centered on its historic courthouse square, local shops, museums, and community events.
Brooksville's greatest natural asset is its setting. The Withlacoochee State Forest—one of the largest state forests in Florida—surrounds much of the area, and the Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area sits nearby, offering hiking, biking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing across tens of thousands of acres. The Good Neighbor Trail and the Withlacoochee State Trail connect Brooksville to a growing network of regional and statewide trails.
The city's location also gives it practical reach. US 41 and I-75 link Brooksville south toward Tampa and north toward Ocala, and the growing communities of Spring Hill and the Adventure Coast lie just to the west. That combination of a preserved historic core, deep access to protected forest, and growing regional connectivity defines life in Brooksville today.
